Simpson Financial Group  Preparing for life’s uncertainties

doctor with little girlFor many parents, vaccinations are a big question. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a very specific plan for vaccinating your child. In nearly every instance, it is a good idea to ensure your child has the proper vaccinations recommended by his or her doctor.

Many parents elect to make decisions about specific vaccinations and most worry about their safety and benefit. The Affordable Care Act is there to help you in many ways. It's important to understand the coverage it provides and what it means to you.

The Benefit of the Affordable Care Act

The underlying goal of the Affordable Care Act is to make access to vaccinations and doctor's appointments for children more within reach. That is, the requirement to have this type of health insurance may mean you have to have coverage to protect your child and his or her medical needs.

This is why you are likely to have coverage for vaccinations required by your doctor or recommended for your child. There are a few things to keep in mind about this.

  • The Affordable Care Act does not require you to have vaccinations. There is no health insurance plan that will punish you for not having these types of vaccinations. Some people question whether a child needs all vaccinations. Others choose not to have their child vaccinated for various reasons. However, you may find there are recommendations from your doctor.
  • Vaccinations are generally a covered component under basic Affordable Care Act health insurance. The details of your policy may differ slightly from others.
  • You may have to pay out of pocket costs for your child to see a doctor to receive vaccinations during a standard doctor's appointment. Most health plans do provide wellness checkups, though. This means that you should have coverage for the doctor's appointment where your children can get vaccines.
Are you unsure if you should give your child vaccinations? You do not have to make this decision alone. Instead, talk to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits. Discuss the specific vaccination your child needs, what the risks of that product are, and what your options are for having the child vaccinated.

While the Affordable Care Act does not legally require you to have vaccinations, local and state rules may differ. It is important to know what local areas require. Your healthcare provider should help you to understand what these rules are and what options you may have otherwise.
