College student with backpack

Many young people move away from home for the first time when they go off to college. College students often must see to their own welfare. This often includes managing their own health.

Should a student get sick or hurt while at school, they might need resources to recover. Health insurance can assist these situations.

But where do students get this health insurance coverage from? There are several options.

1. Remain on their Parents' Plans

While they are growing up, many children have coverage under their parents' health insurance plans. If parents receive employer-based coverage, they can often carry their children on these policies at little or no additional cost.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) also makes allowances so that children can stay on their parents' health insurance plans throughout college. In fact, children can remain on their parents' plans until they turn 26 years old. This will often cover them coverage throughout their college education.

2. Purchase Student Health Plans

Many colleges and universities offer student health plans for qualified enrollees. Sometimes, students have to carry health insurance in order to enroll in classes. Student health plans often help provide coverage for those who do not have access to insurance otherwise.

In many cases, students find these health plans affordable, as colleges can offer the opportunity to lump them into tuition costs. However, students should scrutinize the plans carefully before enrolling. Student health plans often come with significantly limited coverage.

3. Invest in a Personal Health Insurance Plan

If a student finds their parents' health insurance does not meet their needs while in college, they might consider enrolling in their own health insurance policy. For example, a parent's health insurance might not cover the student in the state where they attend school. Therefore, it may be easier for the student to enroll in their own plan.

Often, students have options if they decide to get their own coverage. Students may be able to choose between ACA-managed plans and private plans that offer different policy options. Some students may also qualify for Medicaid coverage based on their needs.

When determining what type of health insurance they need, students and their parents should talk to their insurance agent. The agent can walk students through their options to get effective coverage.
